2010: Alexandroupoli Municipality, Evros, East Macedonia and Thrace Periphery

In May 2010 an experimental tree-planting project was completed with the help of volunteers from both schools and cultural associations in Alexandroupoli. The initiator of this project is Stavros Kioroglanidis, President of the “Volunteerism” Association of Alexandroupoli. In collaboration with Alexandroupoli Municipality and “Volunteerism” Association of Alexandroupoli, and the tree-planting was organized through the collaborative efforts of the Municipality of Alexandroupoli and “Volunteerism” (the coordinating and implementing authority). Also participating were the Cappadocian Evros Association, the Asssociation for Persons with Special Needs of Evros, the Platanotopites Association of Alexandroupoli.
The tree planting activities took place at:
-the 12th Elementary School of Alexandroupoli
-a 1 hectare area located at the Southeastern side of Alexandroupoli, adjacent to the 11th Elementary School
-a 1 hectare area located in Platamonas, Alexandroupoli at the Cultural Center of Platanotopites
-a 2 hectare area in the cultural village of Ianna, Alexandroupoli
“We are very pleased at the students’ participation”, states Ms. Katerina Fotiadi, liaison of “Plant Your Roots in Greece Foundation”, adding that “volunteering is a socio-cultural value that Greece needs today, more than ever”.
