“Plant Your Roots in Greece” donation to Kalyvia Municipality in Athens
The Hellenic American Council of California, AHCC, donated the sum of USD 45,775 to the Municipality of Kalyvia in Athens through the Greek expatriate “Plant Your Roots in Greece” Initiative.
The sum donated will be used for new water reservoirs, watering systems and irrigation projects within the framework of municipality efforts to restore the natural environment of Mt Panio taking place with the support and active participation of the local community and tens of volunteers.
The “Plant your Roots in Greece” Initiative operates under the auspices of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and UNESCO.
AHCC representatives and members of the “Plant your Roots in Greece” Initiative visited recently the Kalyvia Municipality and met with Mayor Petros Philippou.
“Plant your Roots in Greece” Foundation President and SAE USA Regional Coordinator Theo Spyropoulos expressed regret for the new wildfires that erupted in the country and underlined that a public awareness campaign aimed at sensitizing the Greek expatriates is being launched to meet the increasing need for reforestations, irrigation projects and fire prevention in Greece.
Spyropoulos stated that the board members are considering purchasing fire engines to be used to water the trees in the region of Mt Taygetos as well as in firefighting efforts.
Volunteers from Greece and abroad will participate in tree plantings scheduled for the next planting season, he said, adding that the goal set is to make the initiative an international endeavor. He also underlined the need for cooperation with the Greek government to proceed with the drawing up of special programmes promoting environmental protection and volunteerism.
